iEat

Lyrical Lemongrass tagged me on my old blog with my favourite food. Ooh this is a tough one.

I go through food cravings as much as I go through mood swings. I’m a Libran so it’s perfectly excusable to be craving kiam seng ti (literally salty, sour and sweet in Hokkien, aka preserved fruit) on on scale only to swing wildly to the other end and crave lor bak with teng kia in the next mouthful! :P

As tough as it is, here’s something I’ve been pigging out on recently. The right probably looks quite familiar to KL-ites and Terengganu-ans (??). It’s keropok lekor both in the thick and thin forms. The left however, is something very special that probably only Johoreans recognise - mee siput!

My love affair with the two started when I was a wee gal in Johor. I grew up there so, yes, I eat mind-numbing chillies with nary a scream!

Mee Siput was sold in our school canteens and how we kids loved this snack! It’s essentially yellow mee that has been dried in the sun, then fried into a crispy curly little snail. Eat it with the hot sambal and you’re in heaven! It’s got that distinctive noodle taste but in a crunchy delicious texture! Gorgeous! It’s not easy to find anymore but I got lucky because a colleague of mine had some which she fried and shared out in the office. How nice to eat a slice of my childhood again!

Keropok lekor is something I recently started eating buckets of, no thanks to my office area which suddenly sprouted some keropok stalls! This doesn’t beat my ultimate keropok favourite - fish keropok. It has to be dark dark brown and fishily smelly. The smellier the better it’ll be when it’s fried! I simply love how it unfurls itself to expand into a huge cracker to be eaten in great quantities until you develop a sore throat!

Ah, the joys of unhealthy food! :P And now to see what unhealthy or healthier options others eat!

Mee Siput comes in two varieties, crushed or whole. But yes, both forms taste much better with the spicy or sweet chilli sauce. *salivates*

My KL-ite friends from other states used to ask me to “import” plastic-bag-loads of them back to KL (together with boxes and boxes of otak-otak) whenever I went back to Muar. And as a favour, I would be the delivery man, grant their wishes and fulfill their desires and cravings.

Now I don’t know if I know where to source for this delicious snack anymore! I used to know exactly where to find them in Muartown, but they’re almost extinct now, like our polar friends! Once upon a time, they were sold abundantly in school canteens and by old Indian vendors on their cycle carts, who also merchandised kachang puteh, kachang rebus and muruku on the streets. Those were the days when Mee Siput only costed 20 sen a piece!

Then much later on in life, they could be found at a stall on the ground floor outside Hock Hai Plaza (before Hock Hai closed down). Now I don’t know if the stall still exists!

Save our Mee Siput from extinction!

Pinkelle says: Thanks for the history and commentary on Mee Siput, Orbiter!
