Smelly No More
I was on my usual route to work this morning when I heard over the radio that our great Malaysian scientists have created a Smelly No More durian which is poised to take off very big in Europe and US! Oh my, what a turning point in history!
Durian with no more smell is like chao tau fu without it’s stinkiness, like petai without its stink-inducing breath, like blue cheese without the pungent smell and like caviar without the fishy salty texture!
It got me thinking though that if durian no longer smelled, where was the appeal in eating it anymore?! Without that unique pungent smell, it’s just plain yellow custard…then again, even custard has a nice, eggy smell so I wonder how much pleasure eating odourless custard can be!
Perhaps, the scientists should have come up with something like what the Japanese have instead. You see, the amazing Japanese have invented a quirky little liquid that keeps your loo perpetually odour-free! Just drop 2 little drops after you’ve done your…erm…business and voila…Smelly No More!

So the next time we want to eat durian but can’t bear the smell, just drop 2 drops on your fruit and Smelly No More too!

Dowan la….eeeks. I love my durian with its smell
PE says: Hehe…yeah the smell’s part of it’s charm!
Sure 2 drops enough for durians? They should sell it at a larger quantity so I could go around Malaysia wiping out durian farms! OLE!
PE says: Oh my, I can tell what a non-durian fan you are, Gallivanter!
OLE!
I like my durians just the way they smell, thank you very much, clever Malaysian scientists. *turns nose up at smell-less durians with disdain*
PE says: What’s durians without it’s signature smell, eh?! No lingering smells to sniff at hours later to remind yourself of the lovely durian feast you just had! Hehe…
you sure this works? waaaa, then can eat durian here in Sydney without the neighbours complaining liao! that is, if we can find any here in the first place!
PE says: Erm, the drops are for the loo but haven’t tested if it works for durians too! Sydney got durians la..I’ve seen them in Paddy’s and Chinatown before but they’re the giant Thai variety!
durian has the best smell! how could u mar the smell!
PE says: Fresh durian smells good but durian when it’s been eaten, processed and the gas expelled by a person in whatever manner does not smell good!
I need more than two drops tomr! The man’s colleagues have organised a trip to a durian plantation. Heaven Forbids!
PE says: Oh no! I do hope you enjoy your trip to the plantation nonetheless! Maybe lil girl might end up liking durians!
I’ll have three dozen bottles for my Toilet, please!
PE says: THREE DOZEN?! This must be a serious loo problem?! Heh…
Sorry fellas but what is standing between me and the durian is the smell! *waiting for odourless durian and running away before I kena hentam by PE*
PE says: Go give smell-less durians a try and tell me how they are!
Funnily, I never thought durians were smelly! In fact, durians must have that signature smell to ‘inform’ that a family member or a neighbour had bought some home! I cannot imagine durian-smell-less days!
PE says: They say there are 2 kinds of people - those who either love or hate durians! I do like the smell sometimes too, especially when it’s freshly opened. However, durian that has been eaten and “processed” don’t smell so good anymore when the eater chooses to burp
but then again… the durian smell is pleasant to some…!
PE says: You must be a durian lover then, Zewt!
Durians without smell is no longer durians.. LOL
PE says: WELCOME! Wah so honoured to have the good doctor dropping by!
Welcome and have a durian feast!
I suppose it’ll work for the after-durian-burping-session, which can be quite disgusting when one is trapped in a car with someone who just ate durians!
PE says: Ooohh that’s painful! O_o
Perhaps they’re taking away the smell but leaving the taste? After all, durians are known as the fruit that smells like hell but tastes like heaven! Smell and taste are two very different senses, one stimulates the olfatory pathway of the cranial nerves whilst the other, the glossopharyngeal pathway. So if my assumption is correct, then the ang mohs can enjoy the sweet-bitter taste of durian without its pungent smell. But as for me, give me a smelly durian anytime!
PE says: Hmm…dunno but my tastebuds have evolved to not like durians anymore! Surprising for someone who used to love the bitterest durians and could eat piles of them in one sitting!
