Segway and Away!

by Pinkelle on July 4, 2007

At dinner last night with the sibs, while battling the sweltering heat, I decided that everyone should switch to a Segway for transport! No more cars and haze! For those of you who don’t know, this is a Segway:

As of last night, fluffy me thought that the Segway was simply powered by momentum, ie moving your body back and forth to propel where you wish to go. No electricity or motor engine! *smacks head* Now I know why I’m not an engineer and why I got crappy results in Physics! Based on this premise and in my great debate in trying to campaign the use of the Segway, here are our bright conclusions:

  • You’ll probably need to start off at 7am to get to work by 9am, cruising at a gentle speed of 5km/hour. Feel the wind in your hair!
  • You’ll get a speeding ticket when your speed hits 25km/hour!
  • There shouldn’t be any more potholes, unless some really fat users are cruising constantly in the same lane with their Segway!
  • How about if we wanted to go back to our hometown or up to Penang to visit GT? You’ll probably need to start your journey a few days in advance or as bro very cleverly concluded, use economics of scale! Segway-ians headed in the same direction come together to form a train so your momentum will be faster and when you reach your destination you just break away! LOL!
  • And now for the million-dollar question, how will you go uphill?!!

Being the responsible blogger, I couldn’t feed my readers with wrong information so I did some research this morning and lo and behold! The Segway is powered by batteries which allow up to 24 km on a single charge! *PE runs to hide under a rock* Hmm…imagine having to lug a huge battery charge pack to work if your workplace is further than 24 km!

Boss, my battery died and I had to push my Segway with my leg all the way to work!

The Segway apparently becomes an extension of your legs and is so finely tuned to your body via some electronic panels that all you have to do is to tilt your body in the direction you wish to go and it’ll adjust at your slightest whim. Now, if only this “adjusting to your slightest whim” applied for men too! Heh…

It’s a nifty little thing made by the Dutch and apparently police, companies and golfers in Europe are starting to employ it although I do wonder how fast police can go after people on their little Segways! Since the site said you can actually build your own Segway, perhaps they have some high super-charged mean machines! It’ll be like IKEA though, wouldn’t it? I need a Segway so I trot off to Segway store, buy a flat pack, pore over the instructions and voila, a Segway! Although knowing my pink fluffiness, mine probably wouldn’t move!

It’s quite cute though and I wouldn’t mind having the experience of riding one! I believe there are some tours in Europe that actually do Segway tours around the city!

And so, because You Asked For It, here’s the Segway and proof that Pinkelle is not just all about pink fluff! *grin*

Eh, you mean the Segway runs on batteries? *joins PE under rock*

By the by, it would be terribly inconvenient to use a Segway when it rains, right? How to steer and hold umbrella at the same time? *puzzles over it*

PE says: Yeah, the amount of trivia I learn from the internet is amazing! :P Hmm…I never thought about using it in rainy weather! But you’re right! It probably cannot run in floods either which KL is getting so famous for! End up getting electrocuted! Hehe…

I say just use any vehicle la, as long as you get to Penang in one piece! Then we can all go for cholestrol-laden char-koay-teow and oh-chien!

PE says: Woohoo! And Penang Rojak Buah and Mamak Mee and Lor Mee and Hokkien Mee and…*drools and borrows Ethan’s bib from PB*

I think it looks absolutely nifty, and very handy to travel to the grocery shop for a quick pick-up! to work, no lah. not unless you live 5 minutes away from your workplace in the first place.

PE says: Yay…race, race! :) Jom!!
