Ooh…don’t you love Pierce Brosnan? He’s so suave, good looking and stylish despite his age! I remember his rapier sharp wit in Remington Steele and how British he looked in James Bond! *Sigh*

It’s August, the month of Merdeka and our National Day is just 2 weeks away but things have been strangely quiet on the front. The rats are probably having a party on Dataran Merdeka!

Yesterday, I watched the news and there were the usual laments about how the youth of today see Merdeka as simply a public holiday to trawl the malls. I like the answer given by one of the interviewees who said:

Sure, we appreciate that we are now independent but that was 51 years ago. What’s more important now is how we are going to move forward.

Yup, 51 years since Tunku Abdul Rahman delivered his famous Merdeka speech and where we are we today?

51 years later, the underlying sentiments of racism has never been stronger when we were once fiercely proud of how the world looked upon us, impressed at how we lived, worked and mingled in harmony despite being of different races and religion.

51 years later, we have our national Proton car which despite its many versions, still unfortunately remains the most popular car on the road simply because its cheap and not because its high quality.

51 years later, and the newspaper headlines are full of accusations that people have stopped reading them because we all know what tomorrow’s news are already going to be.

51 years later, inflation is at an all time high, the man on the street is wondering how to make ends meet, the share market is in the doldrums and we are all encouraged to take up second jobs.

51 years later, parents worry more everyday about what their children are being taught in school and this are the future of our country.

51 years later, where are we?

I had the opportunity to read the Singapore papers and as much as I didn’t want to, I couldn’t help contrasting the patriotism the people of our neighbouring country had for all their misgivings. When it rained during their National Day parade, they pulled out their red ponchos from the goodie bags given and sang “Stand up for Singapore” in a sea of red.

I dunno, should someone conquer us again for us to feel national pride and get our act together?!

I’ve been having to wake up at the unearthly hour of 5.30am every morning to drive to work, simply because of the lack of parking space at this office. Sometimes I wonder if I made the right choice in moving away from an office where I had a cushy parking lot and room of my own!

Anyway, decisions aside, my early morning entertainment often features replays of the MixFM Lie Detector test. I really don’t like the MixFM morning crew but this new Lie Detector test they have introduced only fueled my dislike further. What is there to gain by making people air their dirty laundry in public or admit to things which can only serve to hurt their partners or loved ones? They claim the lie detector is certified genuine by the HP Office Jet Pro All-In-One Printer. How a printer company certify a lie detector polygraph machine beats me!

Some of the notable lie detectors tests I’ve heard really did get to me and left me wondering what these people thought they would gain from it or how much faith they were going to put on this machine. To me, it seems like a lot of hurt:

Question: Do you regret marrying your wife?
Answer: No
Lie Detector: He’s lying

Question: Do you still love your wife?
Answer: Yes
Lie Detector: Deceptive 

Question: Will you continue seeing your ex-boyfriend after you’re married?
Answer: No
Lie Detector: She’s lying

I know there’s an RM1,000 prize to be won but please don’t ask your loved one in public if she/he has cheated on you, don’t ask your father on Live radio if he loves you or your brother more, don’t admit to not loving your wife on air - simply to win that money. Will it be worth it after you have aired all your dirty laundry in public for the nation to hear? I don’t think it is. Sometimes money can’t repair the hurt or spoilt relationships that your “lies” may have caused.

I decided not to join the hordes of couples rushing to register their marriage on this auspicious day of 08-08-08. Actually, I haven’t even planned my ROM! *gulp*

However, all wedding planning and stress will cease tonight for me to plonks myself on my fluffy pink cushions to catch the Opening Ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics!
